Twitter?
After reading about Twitter on Amy Burn's blog, I am curious about its classroom and professional applications. Has anyone used twitter in the classroom or for professional networking? If so, what have your experiences been? It is a worthwhile use of time or another possible social distraction like Facebook? Your feedback is greatly appreciated...

I can't even find a good reason to use Twitter for myself!
ReplyDeleteThe only potential benefit I could see in doing so would be sending students and parents real time updates regarding upcoming events. Still, you could also accomplish this with mass text messaging, Facebook, online forum, email, etc. Twitter doesn't offer enough for me to jump on that bandwagon, yet. But it's definitely worth keeping an eye on. Who knows what they may offer tomorrow.
I've got to say, in my experience I agree with Eli. I got a Twitter account on a whim, and haven't found a single good use for it other than to provide my fanatic stalkers with semi-narcissistic updates on my riveting daily eduventures.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I am still of the opinion that any new communications technology has the potential to be good technology. Someone will inevitably find a great educational use for it- it just probably won't be me.
I love Twitter. While it can be distracting, I learn a great deal from the people I follow. I think that is the key - be sure to follow people who can add value to your life (personally, professionally, socially, etc.). It truly can be a valuable component to your PLN. I suggest downloading and using one of the free desktop applications instead of the web interface. If you have an iPhone, check out Twitterific (I use the free version, which displays a few non-intrusive ads). If anyone wants to follow me, I'm "wbauer" on Twitter.
